Les bibliothèques
des collèges d'enseignement général et professionnel
du Québec (1976-1999) : l'urgence d'une relance
Marcel Lajeunesse et Daniel Morin
Following up on two previous
studies (1986 and 1994), the authors analyze a set of indicators
to examine the evolution of CEGEP libraries during the decade of
the 1990s, and to determine their present condition. The indicators
selected are: collections, services offered, personnel, users and
financial data.
To obtain a long-term
view of the libraries in Quebec's CEGEPs, this study takes into
account the results of the two previous studies, and compares performance
indicators for the years 1976, 1983, 1992 and 1999.

Le
Dublin Core, un exemple de métadonnées
Suzanne Bureau et Nathalie Ebacher
This article explains
the concept of metadata by studying a particular case. Following
a short introduction to the world of metadata in general, the authors
present the Dublin Core, a metadata element set intended to facilitate
discovery of electronic resources on the web. It is a simple system
intended to be usable by non-catalogers as well as resource description
specialists. Several projects are mentioned, some of which are not
based on the Dublin Core, as well as a number of tools which do
use the Dublin Core. The observation is made that the world of metadata
is vast and fascinating.

Un
système de gestion automatique des pages thématiques
des ressources choisies au réseau Internet
Marcel Simoneau et Cao Lieu Nguyen
This article describes
an automated system for managing theme pages of Internet resources
chosen for their relevance to academic topics. Theme pages contain
the bibliographic elements required to identify and access Internet
resources, elements such as URL, title, subject, etc. Manually maintaining
the theme pages involves a number of tedious steps, such as checking
for broken hyperlinks and adding, modifying and deleting entries.
The system described here provides for automatic detection of broken
hyperlinks and for speedier updating of entries by means of forms. The
prime benefit for the users is the ability to access the resources
using search criteria integrated into the theme pages of the UQAM
Library web site. The article describes the architecture and the
operation of the software developed, its incorporation into the
web site, and the conclusions derived from this experience.
