Libraries
in the New Millennium : The Case of the Digital Collections program,
McGill University
David McKnight
During the past four
decades, academic libraries have undergone a gradual evolution from
early experiments with automation to the digital explosion of information
on the World Wide Web. One area that has been of particular importance
is the creation of digital content based on rare and special collections.
This paper examines the role the Digital Collections Program is
playing in transforming the library, and the associated management
issues that have emerged during the past five years of the Program's
operation within the McGill University Library System.
